Problems With Embedding? Get Your Own Server

It’s as simple as that. While the news that Photobucket videos are no longer showing on MySpace doesn’t directly affect me, it will have a knock on effect, mainly with the bands that I ‘audition’ throught the now Fox / Newscorp controlled social site. But my advice is simple. If you rely on a hosted service, realise it could get hosed at any time.

And that means, as with everything in the computing world, you should have a backup of all your data so you can move it another server at most. Just make a little directory on your computer, and when it hits 4gb, burn it to a DVD. Better yet, look at how much hsoting costs nowadays. With a little look around, you can get a personal space that will let you run software (such as WordPress) with a decent level of storage for £55 per year (no referral money there, but I do use Easy Internet and their Virtual Servers for a number of my side projects and volunteer organisations that I help with).

If you have even a half serious idea that needs the internet (such as a band, a new podcast, a blog about fly fishing, whatever) then do take the time to make your own space yours. For sure use everywhere else, but never ever rely on them as a primary point in your business plan. Exploit them till they exploit you!
