Bone Marrow Transplant Updates
In the post this morning was a letter from the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust (see also here and here). In short, while I am compatible with the patient, they have a second donor who matches up just as well in the bloods, but is a better match when the additional compatibility criteria are considered (my feeling is this could be based on ethnicity, which can have a huge impact on the procedure).

I’m still not sure what to think on this. Part of me is very much relieved that I won’t be going through the operation to extract the bone marrow – but the flipside is that the chance to be involved and help someone else was on my mind, and that’s been taken away. Right now I’m not sure which is the stronger feeling.
But if you’re reading this blog and you’ve nipped over to put yourself on the Register in case you’re the long shot someone else will need, then something good has come out of it.

Remember, though, it’s very good news for the patient.
Two good matches are two more than many people get.
Best wishes to both of you.

Inspired by your good self I rang in to register for donorship. They are sending the forms out for me to fill in. I did however run into the old health thing. Being a depressed asthmatic with slightly raised blood pressure may well ermmm rule me out.
I had this vision of my bone marrow sort of sitting around watching day time tv cause it couldn’t shake itself of the apathy.
I agree with Linda about the good news aspect, and remember you already do lots of good stuff to make peoples life that bit more pleasant already:)
