Measuring Success… Keynoting the EBU’s “Multimedia Meets Radio” Conference

Just to make my life more interesting, in the week before I nip over to deal with a few things in America (ahem…) I’ll be in Barcelona. I’ve been invited by the European Broadcasting Union to sit on the keynote panel of their Multimedia Meets Radio conference. The ninety minute panel is based around the question that the conference is wrapped around, namely “Measuring Success.” My initial take on this is fairly broad. In the media 1.0 world, there are agreed metrics and how you measure them, even though the sampling can lead to some weird results (eg the RAJAR

But If You Try Sometimes, You Get What You Need

Tim O’Reilly posted up some thoughts on what you want vs what you need, which rang true with myself, but what piqued my mind was a few lines at the end of the piece: I’m reminded of a wonderful line from Garrison Keillor, which I heard years ago on A Prairie Home Companion and which has stuck with me ever since: “Some luck lies in not getting what you thought you wanted but getting what you have, which you may be smart enough to see is what you would have wanted if you didn’t have it.” (Hmm. I just looked

I’ll Also Be At Etech and San Diego for the March Conference Trip

And then there were four… …or six depending if you count SXSW as one, or count SXSW Interactive, SXSW Film and SXSW Music as separate gigs. Anyway, the next (and potentially the last!) conference being added to the March schedule is O’Reilly’s Emerging Technology Conference. This has always held a sweet spot for me, not only because of the number of new products and services I’ve seen demoed or launched at Etech long before they hit the 2.0 buzz-sphere (both Flickr and Dopplr spring to mind), but it was also the first conference I was asked to speak at in

Major Flights into USA For March Booked

So this week saw the major tickets for my March USA Conference Trip booked. I’ll be traveling on Friday Feb 29th into San Francisco, and leaving, also from San Francisco, on Friday March 21st. Beyond the occasional ‘single city’ trips to America in the past, this is the first trip where I’ve done a circle and had the same arrival and departure airport. I’ve a day or two spare in the Bay Area at either end of the schedule, so if anyone wants to meet up, drinks, lunch, etc, then you know where to find me… (hint: I’ve a Contact

I’ll Also Be Attending Mix08 in March

Joining the fun of VON.x and SXSW for my March conference tour is Microsoft’s Mix08, in Las Vegas. Now in its third year, the “72 hour conversation” is Microsoft’s chance to show where they regard the web as moving (or where they’re going to make it come to, depending on your point of view). Those of you watching dates will realise that the second Mix is over, I’ll be on a mad dash to McCarren Airport to catch a flight to Austin for the start of SXSW. Should be fun. I hope you’ll all join me… a few of you
