Musical Time Capsules

What happens when you try to power up and look at the contents of your seventeen year old iPod? James Bareham fights Firewire cables, antiquity, and Thunderbolt dongles to find out. And the results? not just a bit of digital archaeology but a look back into the mind of his younger self: Though my Apple music devices changed over time, growing slimmer and more powerful with every iteration, much of the music on them remained the same. Seventeen years is a long time in both the worlds of music and technology, but not everything dates in the same way. Though

“Microsoft sells out of Surface Pro, just like the Zune HD did in 2009”

Cracking headline from Apple Insider, but it hides two greater truths. Every modern connected device has ‘sold out’ at launch, so much so that the press release is to be expected, and I’m sure someone in logistics is tasked with making sure the ‘zero stock’ tick box is filled. The second is that if the Surface Pro is anything like the Zune HD in terms of quality, durability, and ease of use, then the Surface Pro is going to be a winner (at least for individual users). I still reach for my Zune HD for my portable music when traveling.

Eurovision Podcast hits the front page of iTunes

Well that explains where the extra traffic to the podcast is coming from… Last week the Unofficial Eurovision Podcast was chosen as a “New and Notable” podcast in iTunes, which generated a fair amount of interest in the podcast, and it’s been good to hear from a lot of the delegation press people here at Eurovision they’ve listened to the podcast. iTunes have promoted the cast just a little bit more, by placing it in one of the six front page spots at the very top of the store… It’s currently sitting 5th in the performing arts chart, all just

Video Footage of the iPod Shuffle Shuffle (Open Tech 2005)

It’s taken a while (almost five years!) but the iPod Shuffle Shuffle video has finally surfaced, along with the rest of the event footage from OpenTech 2005. To remind you, I was chairing a panel on Media Hacking, and decided that I would do some “physical media hacking” to waken up the audience: The experiment was planned to go something like this. Two pairs of volunteers would come forward… with a pair of 512mb and a pair of 1gb iPod Shuffles. They would swap over their units with each other, and take away an iPod Shuffle with a different audio

Shall We Revive The Mixtape For SXSW Interactive?

An idea I’ve had for a while, now given an airing for the upcoming SXSW Interactive conference. I’m going to call it MP3 Shuffle, and throw together a quick WordPress Blog for the project (mp3shuffle.wordpress.com). [MP3 Shuffle is] a musical project at SXSW Interactive 2009, where attendees put together a Modern Mixtape on a USB Memory Stick, and swap it with others via a big cardboard box throughout the Conference. Please use #mp3shuffle to tag any posts, twitters or other online media discussing the project. You can throw questions about it, how it works, and everything else at me here,

My Video Podcast, Podcamp Boston and the LOLSaurs

Back from the travels, and the last stop had been Podcamp Boston. Two things of note from my point of view from the event. The first, of course, is that I’m more than happy now to tell people about “Spence” my video podcast. If you’ve not had a heads up yet then head over to the site (or subscribe to the feed). And if you’ve been holding back at my request in telling people about the show, consider that to no longer be in effect. Time to find a viewer! So in a sneaky move, the most recent episode (13)
