SXSW Breakfast, Anyone?

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017

I’ve been a regular at Austin’s SXSW for far longer than I care to remember. It’s a heady mix of music, film, and ‘interactive’ stuff and I’ve always met many old friends, made new ones, and had my creative batteries refilled from spending a week or two in Texas.

This year is no different, and I’m flying out today.

The other thing that happens every year at SXSW is Saturday morning breakfast at Magnolia Cafe on South Congress. As usual I’ll be there a little bit ahead of 8am to grab a table and see who else turns up. A few of you have already asked and got the date in your diary, for everyone else reading let me know if you plan on turning up.

And if you want to meet at SXSW for any reason, I’m there for the full duration through to Sunday 19th March.

Should Breakfast Radio Be Short Spots Or Longer Features

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Some interesting thoughts via Media.Info on breakfast radio and why common perceptions and styles don’t match up to the data:

New data analysis based on millions of listener movements from the official Scandinavian PPM ratings systems show that this long-standing model has too rigid a focal point. Only half of listeners on Scandinavian airwaves leave their homes during the breakfast show and during the 6 AM to 9 AM period the in-home listeners heavily outnumber listeners on the go.

SXSW Interactive Social Breakfast – 2010 Edition

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

As South by Southwest looms on the events horizon, all the little bits and pieces of other smaller parties and get together that are happening in Austin pop up. The Social Breakfast is my contribution to the calendar of SXSW Interactive.

This year is the third official year of the breakfast, and as always the premise is very simple. I’ll be at Magnolias on South Congress, from 8am on the Saturday of Interactive (this year that’s the 13th March). You’re all more than welcome to come down at the same time to join me. Just as in previous years the staff have put aside their patio area so we can mingle and table hop and not get in the way of one of Austin’s most popular dining spots.

Magnolia's Cafe

I found Magnolia’s many years ago by jumping in a taxi and asking the driver to take me to where he would have breakfast (but not to take me to his house). Five minutes later he pulled up here, and I walked in and simply asked for the house special. All by trusting local knowledge and the staff. And I’ve been back as often as I can.

So the deal is simple. I’ll be there. I know that many people have already put the date in their diaries either because they’ve been there before or have heard on the grapevine that it’s not a bad way to start your SXSW Saturday. We have a good breakfast, good chat, and start off as we mean to go on… meeting new friends and getting reacquainted with those we’ve not seen for a long time.

More event details and RSVP’s are on the Facebook group.

Craving Bagels

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

I have no idea why, and it’s still two weeks or so till I head out to the US (for SXSW, Lonely Planet and the GTD Summit) but I have had a craving for Bagels for Breakfast over the last week or so. Which is weird, because about the only time I do have bagels is when I visit the new world.

Weird…

Small Update to the SXSW Interactive Social Breakfast

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

One of the mails I got after announcing this year’s SXSWi Social Breakfast was from the owners of the Magnolia Cafe, asking how they could help make sure the SXSW folks would be able to meet each other during breakfast.

After some lovely email discussion, the Interactive Social Breakfast will now be focussed in the Patio area of Magnolia’s which will be just for the meeting.

Who says Web 2.0 doesn’t work?

Signups, discussions, pictures, etc are all over on the Facebook Event page. I’ve also had a few people ask if there could be a similar event for SXSW Music on the Wednesday. Is there any interest in that?
