What is the Secret of SXSW?

Apart from those people who will be heading to the scrum of Barcelona the Mediterranean shores for the GSM World Conference, many of us in the online world have SXSW Interactive marked in our calendars. Why you don’t have SXSW Film and SXSW Music marked as well I don’t know… Anyway – more people are asking around for advice about the Austin based conference; why should I go? What should I expect? What will I be able to do there? Where are all the really cool parties going to be? How do i make the best use of my time

How Many Minutes Of Video Must a Man Watch?

The ideal length for a video podcast turns out to be between two and a half to four minutes, assuming you want to agree with the data at Shooting By Numbers. I’d tend to agree with that, but with a couple of caveats. I don’ think it’s a surprise given the proliferation of music videos on services like YouTube that the perfect time fits an MTV-style view of the world, but there are videos and subject matter that need to be longer. Interviewing is a good example. I’ve got a fair bit of experience with this, and my gut feeling

Happy Hogmanay From Scotland

Edinburgh is rightly world famous for its Hogmanay celebrations to see in the New Year. Lots of people (mostly ex-pats) have asked me if I was heading into town for The Bells. Actually I did that years ago many times; now I just stand in the living room window, with a view of the Castle and the fireworks in something that wasn’t approaching freeing. A Close Shave? Or A Cheaper One? Both in Fact!

Last week, the jungle drums were ringing out looking for scottish bloggers who needed a shave – turns out that King of Shaves were promoting their new Azor razor, alongside their existing gels, balms and shaving oils. All this blogger had to do was turn up to their great big bus at Kinnaird Park to experience a new way of shaving. Naturally I let my stubble grow out over 6 days to see just how good it was… More on King of Shaves at their blog.

The Social Flight Sim Video

Courtesy of the London Hacking scene’s filmic auteurs Cristiano Betta and Mel Seckington, it’s the construction and discussion around the Social Flight Simulator from last month’s Mashed event at Alexandra Palace. Thank you very much Cristiano and Mel for the video (and everyone else involved). Social Flight Sim from Cristiano Betta on Vimeo. Now, how can we get a cheque from BBC Three to do a pilot series of “Ewan’s Mad Ideas” and involved as many Web 2.0 people and different skills as possible? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Scoble’s Twitter Interview Misses The Point

…but not for the reason you might think. You see, this isn’t a post about the content of Robert Scoble’s interview with the Twitter team of Ev Williams and Biz Stone over the weekend – after all it’s a simple fact of life that the world goes round, the sky is blue, and Twitter goes down just as conversations get interesting – but more about the how the interview was recorded and the feedback he recorded. Setting the scene is pretty important, and I’ll hand this bit over to Scoble himself: I wasn’t expecting to do a video interview. I
