Ubuntu EEE Becomes Easy Peasy, although I’ll be Waiting a Bit
Something that many in the netbook world (assuming we can still call it the netbook world now Psion have belatedly decided to try and protect their trademark) have been waiting for is the update from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10. While Ubunutu did this upgrade back in October, the Ubuntu-EEE project has taken time to make it as painless (and stable) as possible.
Two things to note are the name change – although it’s a nice project the Canonical team were unhappy with use of the Ubuntu term in the name; and with devices like the Acer Aspire One supported alongside the Asus EEE range, the second half after the hypen didn’t work either.
Hence the name change to Easy Peasy (EasyPC). It’s not particularly inspiring, but what it does – placing the commercial strength Ubuntu onto the netbook computers with the Netbook Remix interface – is what computers as tools should be doing in this new year.
And while the release date of January 1st has been trailed, I’d hold off a bit. You can do an upgrade at the moment, and fresh installs from base systems will be available on January 5th. At the moment I’m going to let the Linux heads sort it out and look at moving up (mainly for 3G Dongle support) late January.

One thing you might want to consider is put the Easy Peasy install on an SD card, and continue to ‘soft boot’ to Ubunutu running on the SD Card – I did this for about two weeks when Easy Peasy was Ubuntu-EEE 8.04. Saw it was stable, and then did the install to internal memory/storage.
